What is Hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a trance state characterized by extreme suggestibility, relaxation and heightened imagination. It's not really like sleep, because you are alert the whole time almost to the point of hyper alertness that is super focused in one direction to the near exclusion of any other thought. You are fully conscious, but you tune out most of the stimuli around you. We actually go into trance states naturally perhaps even more than you think. Have you ever driven somewhere and didn’t remember the drive? Have you ever read a book and the time flew by and you didn’t hear things you should have paid attention to? Also, we suspend disbelief when we are engaged in a good movie. The same thing applies to hypnosis. You are just so relaxed and enjoying the trance that the suggestions (if they are ones you want like releasing muscle tension and trigger proofing) can easily slip in under the conscious radar of the critical evaluating mind to promote psycological and physical change.
